.Recycle SENB came in to present the new changes they have made with waste management. The town of Riverview enforces policies set out by Recycle SENB in an effort to promote a more environmentally friendly community. There have been many questions on some of their practices from residents thus we asked some questions to clarify some of their points. We encourage everyone to familiarize yourself with some of the new policies of Recycle SENB. If you have questions, you can contact them directly or contact your Councillor with questions. Remember, plastic grocery bags cannot be used to put things in or your garbage will be rejected. Clear bags are NOT permitted for leaves either. If you’re not sure why somethings are the way they are, don’t hesitate to contact Recycle SENB.

.Boys & Girls Club – The Club has been offered to get a new fully equipped tech center from Rogers for free (value of $50,000). In order to accept this, they need to expand with new space. Executive Director Lynda Carey presented some options to Council. As the Club is also my employer, I am required to vacate my seat and leave the room for the presentation and discussion and will not vote on the matter either.

.Wellness/Civic Center Update – Jim Scott presented to Council the outcome of the public consultations on a new civic center and possible re-purposing of current facilities. We know that building a new center requires us to plan not only for the new building but also on how best to re-purpose existing infrastructure for recreation. Next step is feasibility!! Onward and upward. Thanks to all those who took part in the public sessions. Your contributions are so important for this to be a sustainable project and truly representative of the complete needs of our town!

.Council approved $11,800 to assist in the funding for the Fire Fit Challenge 2014. The Riverview Fire Combat team will also be fundraising throughout the year. Riverview is excited to host the Fire Fit Challenge that will draw a lot of people in the town!

.By-Laws – Council the third reading of an amendment to by-law R500-5, a by-law relating to emergency planning and procedures in the town of Riverview. This by-law states what course of action is taken when a state of emergency is declared, however it did not state who can declare a state of emergency...so we fixed it. We also had the first reading of a by-law to ensure that all taxicab operators are licensed are per regulations in the by-laws of the City of Moncton.

.Council passed a motion to give direction to staff to move forward with investigating the idea of moving to a shared risk model in the pension plan. Note, we did not actually switch, just gave direction to start exploring the idea of switching over.

.Funding re: Greater Moncton Airport Authority. Council approved funding in the amount of $5000 for the airport authority who has brought in a new direct flight with PASCAN from Moncton to St. John’s. The funding will be used to help promote the new route and is part of a tri-community effort.

As always, if you have any comments or questions, please do let me know! There are lots of exciting things happening in our town. We are getting into the thick of budget time! Public session runs all day on Thursday, November 21 if you’re interested!
